Netscape Won't Show Pictures in Messages, or Picture Attachments Cause shell32.dll Crash
Applies to: CommunicatorOperating Systems:Windows 95/98
Problem Symptoms: "Whenever I receive a picture attached to an email Netscape doesn't just display it like it used to, or Netscape crashes in shell32.dll."
Solutions:
- The most common cause of crashing when you receive a picture attachment in email is an image viewer program that is trying to view the attachment. With shell32.dll crashes in Netscape mail the usual culprit is VuePrint. If you use VuePrint, or a similar utility, try disabling it to see if Netscape stops crashing. If this works contact the program vendor for an updated version that does not crash Netscape.
- Another thing to check if the solution above does not help, or does not apply, is to make sure that Netscape is set up to view images itself. You can do this by selecting the Edit option on the menu at the top of the Communicator window and selecting Preferences. Click on the + next to Navigator and select Applications. There you will see a list of various file types on the right hand side of the Preferences window. Scroll down the list and look for one that says JPEG Image. Highlight it and click on the Edit button. This should bring up a window that looks something like the one pictured below.
The important thing is to make sure that the Navigator radio button is selected in the Handled By area. This configuration should also be checked for the GIF Image file type as well.
