The Netscape Unofficial FAQ

How can I use e-mail offline?

I would like to write email offline, but every time I attempt this my modem dials into my ISP. Is there a way to get into the mail window without making a connection? (3.x)

Navigator will not dial up when you launch it if you do the following:

1. If you are using FreePPP, open the FreePPP Setup, and in the General panel, make sure that "Allow applications to open connection" is NOT checked off.

2. In Options|General Preferences|Appearance, make sure the browser starts with either a blank page or a non-URL location. For example, you could use your bookmarks as your home page location.

3. In Options|Mail and News Preferences|Servers, set "Check for mail" to Never. Otherwise Navigator will dial when it's launched regardless of any other settings.

How can I use email offline (4.0 thru 4.05)
Edit-->Preferences-->Appearance Start in Offline mode, Write your email, then use the File-->Go Online to connect.
How can I use email offline (4.06 thru 4.73)
Option 1:

Click on the "Link" icon in the bottom left corner of the Communicator icon. This will put Netscape in the offline mode. This can be done (if you are quick enough) before Communicator invokes your dialer.

Use File-->Work Offline alternately

Option 2

Edit-->Preferences-->Offline

The Ask Me selection (radio button) will cause Netscape to prompt you whether to start in offline or online mode. Or you can use the Remember Previous State radio button and put Netscape in the offline mode before quitting.

Write your email, then use the Link icon or the File menu to go back online
