The Netscape Unofficial FAQ

Mac - Launching a Telnet Application Does Not Connect To Specified URL

Applies to: Netscape Communicator 4.x for Macintosh
Operating Systems: Mac

Problem Description:

When I type a Telnet address into Netscape's URL/Location box, it launches the Telnet application, but the application does not automatically connect to the Telnet address I have typed in the form of telnet://host.domain.name
Solution:
Step 1: Select the appropriate Telnet application (perform this step only if your Telnet application is not yet associated with Netscape. Otherwise, proceed directly to Step 2)

- Go to menu Edit|Preferences|Navigator|Application
- Select the Description "Netscape/Telnet" and press the "Edit..." button
- Select the "Application" radio button, click the "Choose" button
- Select your appropriate Telnet application
- Set the "File Type" to "TEXT"

Step 2: Quit Netscape and edit your Netscape Preferences file.

Using a text editor like BBEdit, open the file named "Netscape Preferences" found in your System Folder:Preferences:Netscape Users:[your profile name] folder. If the file does not show up in BBEdit's Open dialog box, you may need to drag the Netscape Preferences file onto your BBEdit application icon to open it.

Locate the line that says:
user_pref("mime.Netscape_Telnet.mac_filetype", "TEXT");

- Delete the line above.
- Close and save the file.

Step 3: Restart Netscape.

Restart Netscape and type in the Telnet address in the Location/URL box. This time Netscape should launch the Telnet application and connect to the Telnet address successfully.
