If the source code was ever available, or still available somewhere, please let me know. |

Communicator 4.79 source wasn't released but I think that 4.8 (the last version) was. I haven't looked recently. However, the mail component (Messenger) was not a separate entity and later becamse the source foundation for Minotaur which then later became Thunderbird.
Communicator 5.0 was released and that source foundation was later released as Mozilla 1.0. No idea where the 5.0 source wound up.
AOL owns the Netscape "Brand" and it would be their call to release the source code again, if ever. Communicator 4.8 source is available somewhere I believe but I haven't had any contact with that code since it was developed.

Try this link, may help:

The code was supposed to be released but AOL purchased Netscape in January 1998 and "may" have squashed the release, don't know. I heard way back then that it was released but I never found the release venue. JMZ (Jamie Zawenski) would know IF you can find him. |

I too prefer to use Netscape Messenger 4.79 In the last few days it has been crashing more and more. I identified that it seems to happen more often with the AOL News that is automatically being posted to me into the browser.
I tried everything to stop it. I dowloaded the software and reinstalled. No success. If anything it seems worse. The software will only load for a couple of minutes, and not enough to allow me to turn off the download.
Any ideas for a dinosaur?

You're wasting your time with Communicator as it is not able to keep with modern day programming, etc. Move up to SeaMonkey, it will look a lot like Communicator and easy to use, etc.

You might look in the Communicator forums, and choose the appropriate platform, Windows, Mac, or Linux.
I am posting this using NC 4.04, on Mac System 7. It is working here.
For what its worth, I have disabled both CSS and Javascript. Doing this allows me to get atound on the internet, at least to a point.
You can try that, but, in reality, using any version of Communicator as a web browser is not going to have good success. The mail/news client still works pretty well though.

Thankyou for your reply. Maybe I was a little unclear and should have said that I am only using the Mail/News client part of Netscape 4.79. I appreciate that the web browser side is bound to be flawed by recent CSS, ASP, and Java.
Its worth a try though, to disable these scripts.
I will give it a try right now.

Since the browser portion of Communicator is already loaded in memory, then it's browser will come up when you click on a URL in the mail/news component. Consider (strongly) updating to SeaMonkey. |
