The Netscape Unofficial FAQ

Autodialing in Navigator and Communicator

Applies to: Navigator andCommunicator (all versions)
Operating Systems: Windows 95, 98

Problem Summary: "Netscape doesn't automatically dial my ISP when I launch Netscape."

Solution:

It is no longer necessary to install MS Internet Explorer in order to take advantage of being able to click on the Navigator or Communicator Icon and AutoDial your ISP. In fact, downloading and installing MSIE andthen deleting it can be a bad move. UNinstalling MSIE can be counter-productive because it can delete files that are needed for other applications.

AutoDialing can be accomplished in several ways. We have the file autodial.zip available. Just download and follow the included instructions. A copy ofthe latest URL.DLL file is included, however you can download it separately if you like: url.zip

A 3rd party application (shareware) by the name of DUNCE is very nice and has a lot of features. Check it out at VectorDevelopment.

The Microsoft ISDN Accelerator Pack has been known to provide several enhancements to auto-dialing and re-dialing. It can be installed and then UNinstalled and the enhancements will still be available.

Please Note: This update should not be installed on Windows 95OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2) or Windows 98, where it is already included.
