The Netscape Unofficial FAQ

Yellow ! on Program Launch

Applies to: Navigator and Communicator (all versions)
Operating Systems: Windows 3.x

Problem Symptoms: Upon starting Netscape, a yellow exclamation point(!) appears in a small window with no other clues as to the problem.

Solution:

Try restoring your windows registration database. Open c:\windows\regedit.hlp in file manager for instructions on how.

More Details:

When the "yellow !" plague started with 2.01 I thought back and seemed to remember that an "!" also appeared in the corrupted message with Word. I made a wild, uneducated, 100% guess - the 2.01 dialogue box with the"yellow !" was telling me the same thing - a corrupted registration database. I rebuilt (restored it) per the above and the yellow "!" has not reappeared since.

What did I do? Who knows. It may just be a coincidence - the timing with downloading 2.01. But I am suspicious.

From: Steve Glad, Subject: Yellow "!" On Start-Up

You may recall that we exchanged e-mail about two weeks ago regarding 2.01 not finishing its load and displaying a yellow exclamation mark with an"OK".

As I reported then I was able to solve the problem by restoring the registartion database in WFW 3.11. I have responded to two similar posts in the Navigator newsgroup with this information. Each one reported back that restoring the registration database solved the problem - no more "!" and "OK" onstart-up.
