The Netscape Unofficial FAQ

Installing On A Novell Network

Applies to: Navigator 3.0x and earlier; a corollary of this should be possible for Communicator. Operating Systems: Windows 3.x, Windows 95, Windows NT, requires Novell network.

Problem Symptoms: "How do I do a network install of Navigator?"

Solution:

This was originally posted by John Carter in August 1996.
This is not an official Netscape-sanctioned procedure.

We have an S: drive that is mapped to the APPS: volume We have a WIN dir for the 16 bit apps and a WIN32 for the 95/NT apps in the Win dir we have a NETSCAPE dir in the netscape dir, the following files reside:

DEISL1
LICENSE
README
W32INFO
NAPLAYER
NETSCAPE
NSCAPE16
NETSCAPE
NETSCAPE
NETSCAPE
CERT
CERTNI
KEY
NETSCAPE
BOOKMARK
PLUGINS
ISU

TXT
TXT
EXE
EXE
EXE
TLB
HLP
ORG
HST
DB
DB
INI
HTM
<DIR>

We have an I: drive which is mapped to USER:\user\<username> In the I: drive is a SETUPS dir with a NETSCAPE dir in there. In that dir, netscape.ini and bookmark.htm and the netscape.hst files are stored.

Just modify the netscape.ini file to point them to that dir. And like someone pointed out to me, you also need to change the install drive to that directory if you want to the history file to work. You will want to let netscape re-create the history file (don't copy an old one in that dir).

We then make a c:\netscape dir with CACHE and MAIL Change those paths in the netscape.ini to point to that dir also. Some users changed the mail path to their i: drive so their mail would get backed up by the server.

On the users machine, just apply the ole update that microsoft has on their ftp site, it will do the same thing that Netscape's installed will do (if you don't already have the latest OLE installed).

You need to make the following mod to the win.ini
[Netscape]
ini=i:\SETUPS\NETSCAPE\NETSCAPE.INI

[embedding]
NetscapeMarkup=Netscape Hypertext Document,Netscape Hypertext Document,S:\WIN\NETSCAPE\NETSCAPE.EXE,picture

Create the icon, we use the -i i:\setups\netscape\netscape.ini to help ensure that netscape uses the users personal netscape.ini file. Netscape will automatically switch the win.ini setting back to s:\win\netscape\netscape.ini if it can not find that users netscape.ini (I guess they think this is a feature).

Also make sure the user has a bookmark.htm file where tell netscape it will be, if it does not find one, no longer does it create one, it will try to use one where netscape.exe was started from. This must be another feature of version 2 and 3. Version 1.xx created a bookmark for you if it could not find one. Now in our labs, we HAVE to copy a bookmark.htm file to the users floppy before they go into windows to ensure they will always have a bookmark file ready.

Next make the appropriate registration entries using regedit (merge) or a program like regload.

Besides the problem with the win 3.1 version not following basic mail protocol by saying HELO before delivering mail, netscape from the server works just fine.
